Must-See Historic Sites

History buffs know the importance of visiting key historic sites. This is the only way an observer can get a firm grasp of the momentous events that occurred on those spots. In the United States, there are a few that are especially emotional. Tourists who are in the country should take the time to see at least a few of the most spectacular ones.

Gettysburg National Military Park, located in the gently rolling farmland of south-central Pennsylvania, is the site of the greatest battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere and the accepted turning point of the American Civil War. Individuals can look out over the woodlands and orchards where over 50,000 men became casualties in three bloody days of fighting. The Pickett's Charge area, where the Union men turned back a final bold Confederate attack, is especially moving. The protected battlefield areas are considered hallowed ground and should be treated with respect. In addition to touring the storied battlefield, visitors can also explore the town of Gettysburg itself, which features historic buildings, ghost tours, and antique stores for those members of the family who love to shop. Gettysburg is located within a day's drive of many of the largest cities in the United States. As such, it is quite accessible.

Travellers might also choose to visit Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence itself was signed. Many of the nation's most famous leaders were present for the signing, including Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson. The Liberty Bell, with its trademark crack, is also available for viewing in the area. Re-enactments of some of the associated historical events take place during certain portions of the year. Travellers should check with local authorities and historical societies for more information. Because Independence Hall is located near downtown Philadelphia, the area is a favoured starting point for exploring the rest of the city.

In Washington, D.C., visitors might go to Ford's Theatre, a macabre but fascinating building where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in April of 1865. Lincoln's play box still remains as it was, and visitors can view the hallway down which John Wilkes Booth crept before he killed the president. The basement contains a rather intriguing museum dedicated to certain elements of the assassination and to Lincoln in general. Along with the White House, Capitol Building, and Smithsonian, Ford's Theatre is one historic site that should not be missed, especially for those men and women who happen to be interested in the history of the American presidency. As an aside, some historic artefacts from the night of the assassination can be viewed at the Smithsonian.

No matter which historic sites families incorporate into their vacation itinerary, they should be sure to plan ahead and make their travel arrangements with plenty of time to spare. This should allow them to reach their destinations efficiently and without stress or hassle. You could even benefit and get some extra points on your frequent flyer qantas card for use on another trip away!
